If you're thinking about getting a dog, but you're unsure which breed suits you, then look no further. Dog Files with tell you all you need to know about what to go for. The first edition of Dog Files looks at the loveable King Charles Spaniel.
Living conditions
King Charles spaniels are relatively adaptable, so don't feel like you need to change your living space too much beyond the standard provisions for most dogs. If anything, they would probably be fine with zero provisions, but take some just to be safe (i.e. wires, small objects etc.).
Extra provisions should be made during differing weather conditions, however. King Charles Spaniels deal with cold weather just like most dogs (although you may want to purchase a coat in their younger years), but they do not cope well with hot weather. Bringing plenty water on walks and making sure exercise is not too long or strenuous in the heat are good ways of letting your King Charles Spaniel get their exercise in the hot climate. When not on walks, always make sure he or she has a moderate amount of shade to cool down. There are few things worse for a dog than feeling too hot. And I don't need to tell you about leaving dogs in the car, do I?
King Charles Spaniels are easy to look after, but as great as they are for first time owners, they need a lot of attention, so make sure you have the time. They are not to be left alone for long periods of time as they don't cope well with this. So unless you have someone who can regularly check in on him or her throughout the day, these dogs are probably not best suited to households that are empty for most of the day.
Friendliness
Perhaps the reason you shouldn't leave a King Charles Spaniel alone is because they are arguably the most friendly breed of dogs out there. They are a perfect fit for families, especially those with small children.
They are also friendly towards other dogs and strangers, so if you don't like to talk to people during your morning walk, perhaps its best to go for another breed.
Grooming
King Charles Spaniels are relatively easy to groom due to the nature of their hair. They can be described as a 'brush and go' dog, to an extent. They also don't drool and have a good general health, so maintaining your dogs health should be relatively easy, although they do have a potential for gaining weight due to their small size.
Training
You will have a rather intelligent dog on your hands if you opt for a King Charles Spaniel. They are easily trainable, so their tendency to nip people when they are younger (no more so than most breeds, but common nonetheless) can be easily rid.
Doginess (that's not a word I know, but what else do you call it?)
King Charles Spaniels bark no more than your average dog, giving a relative level of doginess in this aspect. However, they are not very dog-like when out and about. Fortunately, they don't tend to wander off when something catches their eye and stay near their owner, due to their obedient and placid nature.
